The Fort Hays State track and field team delivered an impressive performance Friday (Jan. 31), securing multiple event victories at the Charlie Foster Classic while competing against elite MIAA competition on the opening day of the Washburn Open.
At the Charlie Foster Classic, the Tiger women claimed four individual titles.
Jayme Hagerman led the way with dominant performances in the jumps, winning the long jump with a mark of 18-3Â and securing another victory in the triple jump at 36-1.5.
Liberty Booker excelled in the throwing events, capturing the shot put title with a throw of 42-7.5 while also placing third in the weight throw with a mark of 51-1. The Tigers dominated the 3,000-meter run, securing a podium sweep led by
Arely Maldonado, who claimed the event title in 11:23.89.
Brenna Murphy followed just behind in second at 11:24.10, while
Madison Sutterfield finished third in 11:24.11, capping off an impressive distance performance for Fort Hays State.
On the men's side, the sprint squad impressed in the 60-meter finals, with
Ajai Holmes securing a third-place finish in 6.97 seconds and
Eddie McVay placing fifth in 7.08. The Tigers showcased their depth in the mile, with
Daniel Little leading the way with a second-place finish in 4:29.00 seconds.
Ian Weich followed closely in third at 4:30.64, while
Cole Krug secured fourth with a time of 4:32.31, rounding out a strong performance at the Charlie Foster Classic.
Competing against high-level competition at the Washburn Open,
Hayden Albright led the Tigers with a strong performance in the sprint events. He placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 21.54, hitting an NCAA provisional mark, and advancing to the semifinals in the 60 meters with a time of 6.87.
Avrey Albright was close behind, clocking 6.90 in the 60 meters and 21.87 in the 200 meters.
In the multi-events,
Nolan Churchman positioned himself atop the standings in the heptathlon, winning the high jump with a clearance of 6-5.5, and finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 22-6.5.
Ethan Salmans delivered a well-rounded performance, placing fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.03 and fifth in the long jump with a mark of 22-1.25.
Drew Tolar opened the heptathlon with an impressive first-place finish in the 60 meters, clocking 6.95. The multi's will conclude tomorrow morning.
The Tigers also saw success in the distance medley relay, where
Brady Stegman,
Mayan Paz,
Emery Wolfe and
Christian Darrah placed third overall and were the top Division II team with a time of 10:07.20, closing out a strong first day in Topeka, Kan.
Competition at the Washburn Open will resume tomorrow as the Tigers look to build on their success Saturday (Feb. 1).
