GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a solid start to the 2025-26 season with three champions and 15 placers out of its 25 wrestlers competing at the Maverick Open. Champions for the Tigers were
Kennedy Farrar at 103,
Peyton Hellmann at 138, and
Isabella Renfro at 180. For placers, the Tigers had five finish in second place, three in third place, three in fifth place, and one in sixth place.
Farrar, Hellmann, and Renfro all went 4-0 for the day to win their respective classes. Farrar (103) and Renfro (180) were impressive, both not allowing a point to opponents all throughout the tournament. Farrar had two 10-0 tech falls and two falls (0:32 and 1:27) where she was up 8-0 and 7-0 when she scored the pins. Renfro also did not have to go beyond the first period for her wins, recording three falls and one tech fall. Her falls were recorded in 1:15, 1:06, and 1:09, and the 10-0 tech fall was right before the horn at the end of the first period.
Hellmann recorded pins in her first two matches of the day, one at 5:39 and the other at 2:09, before recording 9-2 and 5-2 decisions for the win at 138. She had to defeat teammate
Ashlynn Goodwin in the final, one of FHSU's five second place finishers. It was the first collegiate tournament as Tigers for Hellmann and Farrar.
Goodwin (138) recorded three falls before meeting Hellmann in the final, finishing 3-1 for the day.
Leiannah Landreth scored a pair of tech falls and a fall on her way to the championship match at 117, but she was on the short end of a close 11-10 decision to Kinzie Williams of Sublime Wrestling Academy in the final and also finished 3-1 for the day.
Addison Broxterman posted a 4-1 record for the day at 131, recording a tech fall and three falls before a loss by fall to Hania Halverson in the championship.
Josie Houk went 3-1 for the day at 160 with a pair of tech falls and a fall before losing by fall to Katie Law of Utah Tech in the championship.
Hailey Conley went 2-1 for the day with a fall and tech fall before losing by fall to Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa in the 207 championship match.
Third-place finishers for the Tigers included
Morgan Maschmann (124),
Dylen Ritchey (145), and
Grace Johns (207). Maschmann battled all the way back from an opening round loss to go 5-1 for the day, recording four tech falls and a fall. Ritchey also went 5-1 for the day, recording a pair of tech falls, a pair of decisions, and a fall. Johns went 4-1 for the day with a pair of tech falls, a fall, and a decision. All three lost to the eventual champions of their classes.
Jaidyn Alvarado (103),
Isabella Cross (110), and
Kaylee Ricketts (160) all placed fifth. Cross was 4-2 for the day, while Alvarado and Ricketts were both 3-2.
Alexis Burton was the lone sixth-place finisher for FHSU, picking up two wins for the day.
