The 10th-ranked Fort Hays State women's wrestling team heads on the road this weekend for the Avila Open in Kansas City, Mo. The one-day tournament takes place on Sunday (Dec. 14) beginning at 9 a.m.

The Tigers are coming off a strong showing at the Bob Smith Open, where they crowned four champions and had 16 total placers. FHSU has had eight tournament champions across three open events so far this fall. The Tigers are also 4-0 in dual competition this year.
 
Seven of FHSU's 14 student-athletes expected to compete this week placed at the Bob Smith Open last week, including 138-pound champion Nichole Moore, 207-pound runner-up Grace Johns, 145-pound 4th place finisher Alexis Burton, 131-pound 4th place finisher Samara Markwardt, 103-pound 5th place finisher Jaidyn Alvarado, 180-pound 5th place finisher Hayleen Martinez and 207-pound 6th place finisher Hailey Conley.
 
Fort Hays State is one of 14 schools projected to compete at the Avila Open, including two NCAA opponents in Lyon College and Upper Iowa.
 
Wrestlers projected to travel for FHSU this weekend include Jaidyn Alvarado, Jade Blackhart, Maddy Blow, Alexis Burton, Hailey Conley, Ashlyn Hahn, Gabby Hampton, Josie Houk, Grace Johns, Samara Markwardt, Hayleen Martinez, Nichole Moore, Kaylee Ricketts and Jazmin Roschmann.
 
Looking ahead, FHSU will return to action after the holiday break when the Tigers head to Cedar Falls, Iowa for the prestigious NWCA National Duals January 9-10.
