Tigers Fall on Road to MIAA-Leading Bearcats

Box Score

Fort Hays State suffered just its second road loss so far this year on Saturday by a score of 74-57 at Northwest Missouri State. The MIAA-leading Bearcats shot 52 percent overall, while holding the 23rd ranked Tigers to just 37 percent. Northwest Missouri State moved to 16-3 overall and 10-3 in the MIAA. FHSU is now 13-5 overall and 7-5 in the MIAA.

The Tigers struggled on offense early as the Bearcats opened the game on a 12-2 run. The Tigers settled in and used a 13-5 run starting just under the midway point of the half to cut the lead to two points at 21-19 with 4:11 remaining. Just as the Tigers looked to be making it a game, the Bearcats closed the half on a 13-2 run to lead 34-21 at the break and seized control of the game.

FHSU cut the lead to nine points twice early in the second half, but the Bearcats followed with an 8-0 run to push the lead back to double digits for good. A fast break dunk by DeAngelo Haley with 5:01 remaining gave the Bearcats their largest lead of 19 points.

The Tigers continued their trend of shooting less than 42 percent in all of their losses this season. The 36.7 percent effort was the third-lowest percentage by the Tigers this year and just the third game this year they have shot under 40 percent. It was just the fourth game they have allowed more than 70 points to an opponent this year.

Moses Dayee led FHSU in scoring with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. He was 4-of-10 beyond the 3-point line. Kendrick Morse was the only other Tiger in double figures with 13 points off the bench. Fort Hays State's leading scorers, Karron McKenzie and Tyrone Phillips, combined for just six points. Matt Simmons, who leads the MIAA in rebounding at 9.9 per game, recorded just one rebound and fouled out in 25 minutes of action.

Jake Reinders paced the Bearcats with 16 points going 7-of-10 from the field in the post. Alex Sullivan was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for Northwest Missouri, hitting three 3-point field goals on his was to 15 points. Kyle Haake also had three 3-point field goals and finished with 10 points.

Fort Hays State has a quick turnaround and makes the short trip over to Missouri Western for the second game of the road trip on Monday night (Jan. 30). Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo.
