The Fort Hays State men's basketball team fell to Newman University in Wichita, Kan. on Saturday (Nov. 24) by a score of 80-78. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field, but a bad rash of 32 turnovers kept the Tigers from coming out victorious in a tight game. FHSU is now 2-2 overall and Newman remained perfect for the season at 4-0.
Fort Hays State looked as though it would pull away early with an 11-0 run to open the game. Newman finally scored its first basket at the 14:30 mark. FHSU led 17-5 at the 12:09 mark before Newman went on a furious 14-0 run to take a 21-17 lead at the 7:46 mark. The lead eventually grew to 12 for Newman in the first half before FHSU pulled back within eight at halftime, 43-35.
The Tigers went on a 7-0 run from the 11:37 to 9:39 marks of the second half to pull within two points at 58-56, but Newman countered with a 13-0 run to push the lead to 15, its largest of the game, with 6:21 to go.
The Tigers would not die easily as a steal and a
Lance Russell 3-point field goal capped a quick 5-0 burst by the Tigers to make it 75-72 Newman with 36 seconds remaining.
Craig Nicholson buried a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to pull the Tigers back within three, but a pair of Darrell Traylor free-throws iced the game for Newman with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Craig Nicholson made a nearly 3-quarter quart heave at the buzzer, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell by two.
Russell led the Tigers with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field with four 3-point field goals and a 3-of-4 effort at the free-throw line. Nicholson finished with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting with three 3-point field goals and a 5-of-8 effort at the free-throw line.
Dwayne Brunson also finished in double figures with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting. He had a double-double with a season-high 15 rebounds.
Fort Hays State shot 26-of-52 from the field (50 percent) and 8-of-20 from beyond the 3-point arc (40 percent), but it was not enough to overcome the 32 turnovers. FHSU held Newman to just 36.2 percent shooting, 30 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
Shamar Acuay finished with a game-high 29 points for Newman on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. He was 12-of-16 at the free-throw line. Darrell Traylor added 17 points, including the game-winning free-throws. Acuay also had a team-high seven rebounds and a team-high four steals. Newman finished with 14 steals in the game.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 28) at 7 pm against Central Christian College at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
