Box Score Following a win in the season opener on Friday, FHSU dropped its first contest of the season on Saturday to West Texas A&M by a score of 11-8. The rubber match of the 3-game series against the Buffs is slated for Sunday.
FHSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a
Nash Smith RBI double, but West Texas A&M tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning. The Buffs went on to score five times over the second and third innings to take a 6-1 lead, but FHSU reeled them back in with three in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.
Kelton Rule had a two-RBI triple in the fourth.
Sheldon Howell and
Anthony Salinas produced RBIs in the fifth, with Howell's also on a triple to tie the game.
West Texas A&M scored one more time off FHSU starter
Alex Ellison in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back for good. Ellison took the loss for FHSU in 4.2 innings of work, allowing nine hits and seven runs (all earned).
The WTAMU lead grew to 11-6 before RBIs by
Ryan Busboom and
JC Ochoa in the eighth pushed the score to the eventual final of 11-8. Carlos Maese closed the door on FHSU in the ninth for his first save of the season for WTAMU. Billy Gonzalez was the winning pitcher in relief for the Buffs.
The teams play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 pm.
