After a thrilling 103-102 overtime win over Missouri Southern on Friday, the Tigers move on to the MIAA Tournament Semifinals on Saturday (Mar. 3) to meet the top seeded Ichabods of Washburn University. Tipoff is set for 6 pm at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. FHSU enters at 19-8 overall, while Washburn is 22-7 overall.
Washburn claimed both regular season meetings between the teams, winning 61-45 in Hays and 79-67 in Topeka. This will be the first-ever meeting between the schools at the MIAA Tournament. Washburn was one of three teams, which also included Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State, that tied for the MIAA Regular Season crown at 15-5 in conference play.
Fort Hays State, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, is on a three-game win streak entering the contest, while Washburn has won four straight. The FHSU/WU winner will face the winner of No. 7 seed Pittsburg State vs. No. 3 seed Northwest Missouri State, which follows at 8:15 pm.
Karron McKenzie continues to lead FHSU in scoring, now at 12.3 points per game. He tied his career high of 26 points in the win over Missouri Southern on Friday.
Moses Dayee set a new career high for scoring in that game with 22 points and ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game.
Kendrick Morse also averages double figures at 10.6 points per game.
Matt Simmons, the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, averages a conference-leading 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game. He recorded the fifth double-double in his last seven games with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Missouri Southern on Friday.
Washburn is led by Will McNeill, who averages 20.2 points per game. He averaged 23 points per game in the two games earlier this year against FHSU.
