The Fort Hays State men's basketball team scored 62 points in the first half and led by 30 at halftime on its way to a 94-68 win over Nebraska-Kearney in Hays on Saturday (Feb. 9). Fort Hays State improved to 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the MIAA with the win. Nebraska-Kearney dropped to 6-15 overall and 3-10 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State was lights out shooting the ball in the first half at 69.7 percent from the field by halftime. With just over seven minutes to go in the first half, FHSU was shooting 81 percent from the field before cooling a bit before halftime. FHSU was at 64.3 percent beyond the 3-point line at halftime, hitting 9-of-14 attempts.
The largest lead of the game for FHSU was 34 points with 11:25 remaining in the game, but the shooting percentage cooled once the game was well at hand and the Tigers went with mostly a reserve lineup. FHSU finished the game at 54.5 percent overall (36-of-66) and 59.1 percent beyond the 3-point line (13-of-22).
Craig Nicholson and
Carson Konrade tied for the team lead in scoring, each with 16 points. Nicholson produced his fourth double-double of the season in points and assists with 11 helpers in the game. He had eight assists at halftime.
Dwayne Brunson had 13 points,
Ben Congiusta had 11, and
Lance Russell added 10.
Jon Henderson led UNK in scoring with 19 points, followed by Pierre Newton with 13, Kendal Glidden with 12, and Thomas Cooper with 10.
Fort Hays State moved into second place alone in the MIAA for the time being and could jump as high as first place if Missouri Southern can defeat Central Missouri in Joplin on Saturday night .
The Tigers head on the road for three in a row before returning home for the final two games of the regular season. FHSU faces Northwest Missouri State, Nebraska-Kearney, and Washburn in the road swing. Northwest Missouri State entered Saturday tied for second with the Tigers and Washburn was just a half-game back of FHSU. The top four teams in the final regular season standings will get byes to Kansas City for the MIAA Tournament.
