The Fort Hays State men's basketball team heads to Oklahoma this week for a pair of MIAA contests. FHSU takes on Central Oklahoma on Thursday night (Jan. 16) at 7:30 pm in Edmond, then heads over to Tahlequah for a 3:30 pm contest against Northeastern State on Saturday.
Fort Hays State enters the week tied for fifth in the conference standings, making a charge all the way from 13th with a four-game win streak following the 0-3 conference start. These will be a pair of strong road tests for FHSU against a Central Oklahoma team that is 10-4 overall and even with the Tigers at 4-3 in the MIAA, and Northeastern State, which is currently 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA. Northeastern State currently joins FHSU receiving votes in the NABC national poll. The MIAA continues to prove strong this year with eight of the 14 teams already with 10 wins overall this year.
Fort Hays State won the only game it played against Central Oklahoma last year by a score of 78-71. However, FHSU fell at Northeastern State last year by a score of 76-61 at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse. This year's contest will be held in the new NSU Event Center.
Craig Nicholson led Fort Hays State in the 88-85 win over Lincoln this past Saturday with 27 points, tying the school record for free-throws made in a game with 19. It tied the mark set by Sam McDowell against Central Oklahoma in 1963-64. Nicholson is the second-leading scorer for FHSU at 16.1 points per game and ranks second nationally in assists per game (8.4).
Dwayne Brunson continues to lead FHSU in scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
Carson Konrade is also averaging double figures in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He ranks sixth nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.537).
Tomislav Gabric is coming off a career-high 19 points against Lincoln and averages 9.5 points per game.
