Tigers Face Familiar MIAA Tournament Foe in Quarterfinals Friday

Fort Hays State (18-11, 10-9 MIAA) vs.
Missouri Southern (20-8, 15-4 MIAA)

MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals
Friday, March 2, 2018 - 2:15 pm
Kansas City, Mo. - Municipal Auditorium

The Fort Hays State men's basketball team will face Missouri Southern in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday (Mar. 2) at Municipal Auditorium. Game time is set for 2:15 pm. The Tigers and Lions meet for the sixth time in the MIAA Tournament, the most meetings against any opponent for FHSU in the tournament in the 12 years it has been members of the conference.

The Tigers are the No. 7 seed in this year's tournament and knocked off No. 10 seed Lindenwood 71-65 in Hays on Tuesday night to seal their trip to Kansas City. Missouri Southern enters the quarterfinal game as the tournament's No. 2 seed. The Lions finished the year 20-8 overall and 15-4 in the MIAA. FHSU enters at 18-11 overall, while finishing 10-9 in conference play.

Fort Hays State won the only regular season meeting with Missouri Southern this season, a 76-69 triumph in Hays back on November 30. Hadley Gillum scored 30 points in that game, one of three games this year in which he scored at least 30. Payton Stephens also reached double figures in that game with 11. All-MIAA First Team selection CJ Carr paced Missouri Southern with 16 points.

Gillum became the ninth player in the history of the FHSU men's program to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career on Tuesday night in the opening round of the tournament. With his 10th rebound of the game, he reached 500 rebounds in his career. He pushed past the 1,000-point scoring mark on February 20 at Nebraska-Kearney. He now has 1,043 points and 501 rebounds in his career. He leads the Tigers at 16.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this year.

Brady Werth pushed his streak of scoring in double figures to 11 straight games with 14 points against Lindenwood on Tuesday. He ranks second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game.

Point guard CJ Carr leads Missouri Southern at 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and an MIAA-best 6.1 assists per game. Sophomore Elyjah Clark averages 16.9 points for the Lions, last year's MIAA Freshman of the Year.
