HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis will play its final home match of the 2024-25 season on Wednesday (Apr. 16). Three seniors,
Irina Alfonso,
Grace Unruh, and
Yone Pereiro will be recognized for their contributions to the program. The MIAA match against Nebraska-Kearney is set for 4 p.m. at the FHSU Tennis Courts. FHSU is 12-6 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, while UNK is 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.
Alfonso is in her fourth season at FHSU and has 85 total wins in singles (42) and doubles (43) combined throughout her career. She broke the FHSU single-season record for combined wins this year, currently with 36. It broke the old record of 35 set by Helen Brooks during the 2004-05 season, which was also the last season FHSU won at least 12 matches as a team. Alfonso's doubles partner
Suzana Faucz is trailing close behind with 33 wins, which has produced a new single-season record for combined wins by a freshman. Alfonso and Faucz have 19 doubles wins this year, which is tied for third-most in a career by a tandem at FHSU, impressively all done within one season.
Unruh is in her third season with the Tigers. She already owns the FHSU career record for wins at the No. 6 singles position in head-to-head matches with 22. She is tied for seventh on the career singles wins list at FHSU with 39. She is now 10
th on the combined career wins list with 62, adding 23 doubles wins to her 39 singles wins as a Tiger.
Pereiro is in her second season with the Tigers after transferring from Florida National University. She has a total of 25 wins in singles and doubles combined for the Tigers, which includes 18 wins this year.
The three individuals have been an integral part of Fort Hays State's team success this year. The trio has a combined 74 wins this season.
