McCullough Breaks 5,000m Record; Multiple Top Marks for Tigers in Three Meets

The Fort Hays State track and field teams competed at three events on Friday (Jan. 30), highlighted by one broken record, two national qualifying marks and three event victories.

Running a long-distance race for the first time since placing 12th at the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships, Emily Diercks McCullough broke the school record in the 5,000m run at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass. with a time of 16:49.86. The senior placed 19th in the field of nearly 100 runners, the vast majority of which were Division I athletes. McCullough's national-qualifying time currently ranks as the second-fastest in Division II this season. She now holds four school records at Fort Hays State, including three indoors (mile, 3,000m, 5,000m) and one outdoors (10,000m).

At the Charlie Foster Classic in Kearney, Neb., freshman Katie Linenberger continued her undefeated season in the high jump by improving her national qualifying mark to 5-10 (1.78m). That performance is just one centimeter behind the Division II national lead and ranks second at FHSU during the program's Division II era. The Hays native did so in dramatic fashion, clearing each of her final three bars (5-6, 5-8 and 5-10) on her third and final attempt.

The Tigers secured two other event victories in Kearney, with Brynlee Frank finishing first in the triple jump with a leap of 36-2.0. Rylan White came away victorious in the men's pole vault after successfully clearing the bar at 15-4.25. Both of those performances were less than five inches shy of the national qualifying threshold.

Bradley Nkosi finished second in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.35 in the prelims before shaving that down to a mark of 8.27 in the finals. That mark ranks second at FHSU during the program's Division II era and is just .08 shy of the program record.

At the Wasbhurn Open in Topeka, Amelia Foster finished sixth in the 600y run with a time of 1:26.73, good for seventh at FHSU during the DII era. A week after etching her name on the FHSU DII era top 10 list in the 3,000m, Emma Weiner did so again in the 5,000m with a time of 17:44.77. The time was good for 13th on the day and 10th at FHSU since 1991.

On the men's side, Avrey Albright ran the 600y run in 1:13.48, good for seventh on the FHSU DII era list and good for 27th on the day. Dean Clark cleared a personal-best 46-5.5 in the triple jump, ninth-best at FHSU during the DII era and good for 14th at the event.

FHSU will wrap up the weekend on Saturday (Jan. 31) when 23 Tigers compete on day two of the Washburn Open. The rest of the squad will be back in action in two weeks when the Tigers travel to Pittsburg, Kan. for the 11th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic.
