Scheck Opens Nationals with Round of 73

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Fort Hays State's Cooper Scheck opened the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship with a round of 1-over 73 Monday (May 18) at Boulder Creek Golf Club, sitting squarely in the middle of the pack at t-48th out of 108 players.
 
The senior opened the day with a bogey before getting to 2-under with birdies on three of the next five holes. He reached the green in two on the par-5 second hole before hitting his second shot inside five feet on No. 3. The Dodge City, Kan. native then gave back shots on the last two holes of the front nine to go out in even-par 36 before returning to red numbers with a kick-in birdie on No. 10.
 
After a missed birdie opportunity on No. 11, he gave away another shot with a bogey on the par-3 12th before recording pars on the next five holes. He finished the day with a bogey on No. 18, completing the opening round with four birdies, five bogeys and nine pars.
 
Scheck is tied or in front of six of the top 12 players in Division II. A pair of players from West Texas A&M, David Vega Gerstel and Luis Palomo, are tied for the lead at 6-under 66, helping WTAMU to a tie for the team lead with Missouri-St. Louis at 10-under.

Scheck will be in the final group to start in round two on Tuesday (May 19), teeing off at 3:55 p.m. (1:55 p.m. PT).
