BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Fort Hays State's
Cooper Scheck rocketed up the leaderboard at the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship Tuesday (May 19) with a round of 3-under 69, climbing 22 spots to a tie for 26th at 2-under for the tournament.
Â
Playing in his 100th round in an FHSU polo, the senior was tied for the 11th best round in the 108-man field in round two after carding six birdies and three bogeys.
Â
The Dodge City, Kan. native hit 15 of the 18 greens in regulation, with two of the three misses ending up in the fringe just off the putting surface.
Â
After an opening par, Scheck birdied the par-5 second hole after reaching the green in two for the second day in a row. Another birdie on the par-5 fifth hole got him to under par for the tournament before he holed a 15-foot putt on the par-3 eighth hole to play the front nine in 3-under 33.
Â
The back nine opened with back-to-back trips to fairway bunkers. A bad lie on hole 10 led to a bogey, but he hit a shot within five feet on hole 11, using the slope on the green to feed the ball back to the hole.
Â
That birdie was followed by bogeys on holes 13 and 14, but Scheck responded by reaching the 635-yard, par-5 16th hole in two thanks to a 4-iron that traveled 260 yards. His 40-foot eagle putt lipped out but tapped in for birdie to get back to under-par for the tournament. Scheck then hit a wedge to six feet and made the putt on the short par-3 17th hole before narrowly missing a birdie putt on the 18th green.
Â
It was Scheck's ninth round in the 60s this season and the 20th of his career. He has now played 11 rounds in a row without a double bogey or worse, posting nothing worse than bogey over the last 207 holes.
Â
Scheck is tied for 10th in the field with 10 birdies through 36 holes. He is eight shots behind the leader, Ian Pienaar of Columbus State, who sits at 10-under after rounds of 68 and 66. Florida Southern leads the team race at 18-under.
Â
The two-time All-Region selection and three-time All-MIAA pick will wrap up his career with round three on Wednesday (May 19) beginning at 11:09 a.m. (9:09 a.m. PT) from Boulder Creek Golf Club.
