Brian Bates, native of Alton, Kansas, was a member of the Fort Hays State baseball team from 1970 to 1973. He was a two-time All-District 10 and All-GPAC First Team selection. Bates is the all-time leader in career wins at Fort Hays State with 28. He had 18 of those wins over his final two years, going 8-2 as a junior in 1972 and 10-3 as a senior in 1973. Bates made 57 appearances in his career, which is third-most all-time at FHSU, posting a school record 2.17 career earned run average in 277 and 2/3 innings pitched that still stands today. His 1.20 ERA in 1972 is third-best for a single season in school history, a season in which he pitched 82 and 2/3 innings. Bates had 162 strikeouts in his career, which is third-most in school history.
