Athletic Director (1989-2004)
Tom Spicer, native of Beaver, Okla., was Fort Hays State University’s athletic director for 15 years from the summer of 1989 to the spring of 2004.  Spicer’s fund-raising efforts led to improved financial support of Tiger athletic programs.  He presided over two national championship performances including the 1990-91 NAIA Women’s Basketball title and the 1995-96 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball title.  He also headed the athletic department in 2000 when the Tiger baseball squad earned NCAA Division II World Series runner-up honors.  Six athletic squads were named NCAA II Academic National Champions during his tenure.  Spicer was largely responsible for improvements made to Lewis Field Stadium.  Through his continued efforts the 1936 stadium was renovated with synthetic surfaces on both the football field and track prior to the 1993-94 and 2003-04 academic years.  He also implemented softball and women’s golf as the 15th and 16th varsity sports at the university.  Spicer is currently the athletic director at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., where he resides with his wife Kathy.
