Paul Simmons, native of Denton, Kansas, was a standout two-sport athlete at Fort Hays State in football and baseball for two years from 1967-69 after transferring from Highland Community College. Simmons was an NAIA All-America selection as a senior in 1968 on the gridiron, leading the Tigers with 117 tackles at linebacker, while also recording two interceptions. He earned All-District 10 and All-CIC First Team honors that year. Simmons also had a solid baseball career for the Tigers, leading the team in batting average (.389) and RBI (15) as a junior in 1968, while not committing an error. He recorded seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI as a senior in 1969. Simmons received the Paul "Busch" Gross Award in 1969, given to the graduating athlete deemed most outstanding in scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and athletics at Fort Hays State. Simmons is also a member of the Highland Community College Hall of Fame.
