As a sophomore, Appelhans was the anchor leg on the NCAA Division II National Championship 4x100-meter relay team for outdoor track and field in 2001. He earned All-American honors all four years in outdoor track and field as a member of Fort Hays State’s 4x100-meter squads. He also garnered All-American status twice in the 200-meter dash and once in the 100-meter dash. For indoor track and field, Appelhans was a three-time All-American, garnering the honors twice in the 60-meter dash and once in the 55-meter dash. Appelhans still owns three individual school records (outdoor 100 meters, outdoor 200 meters, and indoor 200 meters) and is a part of the 4x100 record for outdoor track and field. He was the Most Valuable Athlete at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in 2000 and 2002.
