As a junior, he played a big role in Fort Hays State baseball's run to the NCAA Division II national championship game in 2000, helping the team finish with a 54-12 record that year. He was an All-West Region Second Team and All-West Region Tournament Team selection, then was named to the All-College World Series Team. In his two years at FHSU, Patty had a .356 batting average with 23 home runs, 34 doubles, 113 RBIs, and 108 runs scored. In his senior year when he was conference co-player of the year, he hit .373 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, one triple, 55 RBIs, 61 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases. Patty was a highlight-reel defender as well, posting 308 career defensive assists (154 each season), which tied for second-most among two-year players in program history.
